Greensboro, NC (10/23/00) — Visiting Averett bounced back from an early own goal and junior goalie Chris Barocas (Deltona, FL/Deltona) made seven saves as the Cougars dealt Guilford a 2-1 loss Monday.
Guilford (6-8-1) got on the board in the third minute when Averett junior midfielder Daniel Fary (Dayton, TN/St. Lucia) tried to clear a loose ball off his goal line, but drilled it into an unsuspecting Barocas and the ball bounded backwards into the net for the Quakers' first goal in four games.
Averett made up for the own goal in the 15th minute when sophomore forward Justin Hacker (Montevideo, Uruguay/Uruguayan American) coralled a loose ball and dribbled past three defenders to tie the game at 1-1. Freshman midfielder Chad Underhill (Colonial Heights, VA/Colonial Heights) came off the bench and scored the game-winning goal in the 42nd minute for Averett (7-9-1).
Guilford rookie goaltender Ryan Fitzgibbons (Dayville, CT/Killingly) had five saves in the loss.
