DEFENSE CARRIES GUILFORD WOMEN TO HOOPS WIN OVER BRIDGEWATER

Box Score

Greensboro, NC (01/09/01) --  Guilford guard Kate Goodman (Salisbury, NC/West Rowan) scored a game- and career-high 12 points off the bench and the Quakers held Bridgewater to 34.5 percent from the floor in a 53-43 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's basketball win Tuesday night. The Eagles (8-2, 5-1 ODAC) entered the game with the nation's third-best shooting percentage (47.5%).

Bridgewater held a 27-25 halftime lead after a tightly contested opening period that featured nine ties and 10 of the game's 17 lead changes. The visitors opened a 34-29 advantage with 14:24 remaining on junior Lindsey Coleman's (Buena Vista, VA/Parry McCluer) three-point basket. Guilford (6-3, 4-1 ODAC) responded with 10 unanswered points, including six by Goodman, who scored the go-ahead basket at the 11:42 mark for a 35-34 Quakers' lead.

Goodman's jumper two minutes later extended Guilford's edge to 39-34 before senior forward Becky Midkiff (Manassas, VA/Osburn) ended the Quakers' run with a layup at the 8:20 mark. The freshman's basket marked the Eagles' lone points over an 11-minute stretch in the second half during which time Guilford outscored them, 15-2. Bridgewater made only one of eight field-goal attempts and turned the ball over 10 times in that stretch.

The Eagles drew no closer than six points in the final 3:29 and Guilford made nine of 12 free throws in the final four minutes to seal the win.

Three Guilford players scored eight points, including junior guard Erin Beacham (Atlanta, GA/Lovett School), who added a team- and season-high eight rebounds, plus four assists and four steals. Senior forward Arden Miller (Landenberg, PA/Sanford School (DE)) had eight points and seven boards, while rookie guard Dara Burke (Richmond, VA/St. Catherine's School) scored six of her eight points in the second half and finished with three steals.

Coleman paced the Eagles with nine points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Rookie Sarah Oktavec (Pylesville, MD/John Carroll) added eight markers for Bridgewater off the bench, including two three-pointers. Guilford limited the Eagles' leading scorer, junior forward Sarah Hagood (Shawsville, VA/Shawsville), to six points, eight below her season average. Bridgewater lost starting guard Megan Forster (Shawsville, VA/Shawsville) to a knee injury 2:36 into the game.

The Quakers look to extend their season-high winning streak to four at league-leading Roanoke Thursday (1/11) at 7:00 P.M. Bridgewater visits ODAC-rival Lynchburg Thursday at 7:00 P.M.
