GOODMAN LEADS GUILFORD WOMEN TO ODAC HOOPS WIN

Box Score

Greensboro, NC (11/28/01) -- Sophomore guard Kate Goodman (Salisbury, NC/West Rowan) scored a career-high 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds off the bench to lead Guilford past visiting Emory & Henry, 68-51, in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's basketball opener for both teams Wednesday. The contest was a rematch of last year's ODAC Tournament final, won by Guilford.

Goodman's second three-pointer of the first half with 1:11 left capped a 20-9 Quakers' (2-1, 1-0 ODAC) run that helped the hosts to a 38-27 intermission lead. She scored nine of her 13 first-half points during the spurt and added four rebounds and two assists in 10 active first-half minutes.

Emory & Henry (2-2, 0-1 ODAC) senior guard Kelly Smith (Duffield, VA/Rye Cove), the 2001 ODAC Player of the Year, passed Sallie Lefler as the Wasps' career scoring leader with a pair of first-half free throws. She finished with a game-high 20 points and has 1,298 career points. Smith added 11 boards and two steals in a losing cause.

Guilford's defense forced 31 Emory & Henry turnovers and limited the Wasps to 23.6 percent shooting from the floor, including four-of-19 from three-point range. The Quakers didn't shoot much better (30.5%), but committed just 13 turnovers and did not let Emory & Henry cut into its halftime lead.

Guilford sophomore forward Jennie Keichline (Cary, NC/East Chapel Hill) scored a season-high 14 points and added a career- and team-high 11 rebounds for her first college double-double. Rookie guard Aftan Medlin (Kenly, NC/North Johnston) and senior guard Erin Beacham (Atlanta, GA/Lovett) added 10 points apiece. Medlin's 10 points came on five-of-six field-goal shooting and marked a career high.

Sophomore guard Danielle Moore (Wytheville, VA/Fort Chiswell) scored 10 points for Emory & Henry. Junior forward Erin Connelly (Morganton, NC/Freedom) added six markers and a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Quakers lead the season series with Emory & Henry, 22-7.

Guilford plays this Saturday (12/1) at league-rival Randolph-Macon Woman's College at 2:00 pm, while the Wasps visit Bridgewater Saturday (12/1) for a 2:00 p.m. ODAC contest.
