GUILFORD WOMEN CLAIM ODAC WIN OVER RANDOLPH-MACON WOMAN'S COLLEGE

Box Score

Lynchburg, VA (02/09/01) -- Strong defense and solid post play helped Guilford overcome a poor shooting night and lifted the Quakers to a 66-48 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's basketball win at Randolph-Macon Woman's College Friday night. The victory marked Guilford's 13th in 15 games and moved the Quakers a half game ahead of Emory and Henry and Bridgewater into first place in the ODAC standings.

Senior forward Arden Miller (Landenberg, PA/Sanford School (DE)) and rookie forward Jackie Hardenbergh (Oak Hill, VA/Paul VI) combined for 15 of their 23 points in the second half as the Quakers (16-5, 14-3 ODAC) outscored the Wildcats (2-19, 0-18 ODAC), 44-20, in the paint.

Holding a tenuous 43-39 lead with 7:36 to play, Miller scored four points during an 8-0 run that opened a 51-39 Quakers' edge with 5:10 remaining. Guilford held Randolph-Macon Woman's College without a field goal for nearly six minutes until freshman Dana Ford (Winter Haven, FL/Winter Haven) canned a three-pointer with 1:55 left, which cut Guilford's lead to 60-46.

Behind eight of junior guard Erin Beacham's (Atlanta, GA/Lovett School) 10 first-half points, Guilford took a 15-2 lead, but the Wildcats answered with a 10-0 run to pull within 15-12 midway through the period.  Sophomore guard Meg Hancock (Richmond, KY/Madison Central) sparked the spurt with all seven of her first-half points. Guilford increased its lead to as many as nine points before Randolph-Macon Woman's College rallied to within 27-22 at the break.

Beacham finished with a game-high 16 points and added a team-best eight rebounds. Hardenbergh tallied 13 points and grabbed six boards and Miller scored 10 points. Guilford shot just 38 percent from the floor and a season-low 35.5 percent from the foul line, but converted 30 Wildcats turnovers into 25 points.

Freshman guard Amy Dameron (Fredericksburg, VA/Courtland) led the Wildcats with 13 points. Hancock chipped in with 11 markers and sophomore forward Melissa Wadford (New Bern, NC/New Bern) posted a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Guilford swept the season series from Randolph-Macon Woman's College and improved to 22-1 all-time against the Wildcats.
