Guilford Drops Cougars in OT

Box Score

DANVILLE, VA (10/15/03) - Guilford's Ampofo Darko scored on a Steffen Schollaert assist in the match's 97th minute to give the Quakers a 2-1 overtime victory over Averett University Wednesday at the Cougar Den.

A Guilford (7-5) crossing kick found Schollaert in front of the net occupied by Averett (1-10-1) keeper Jimmy Kalmoutis.  Schollaert made a pass to the left side of the box to Darko, who one-timed the shot past Kalmoutis for the winning goal.

Jason Harmon put the Cougars on the board first in the game's 37th minute.  From midfield, Sam Macri booted a pass into the penalty area to Rocky Cutright.  Cutright touched the ball to Harmon, who found the net for his first goal of the season.  Macri and Cutright were both credited with assists on the play.

The Averett advantage remained 1-0 until Schollaert scored an assisted goal with just 12:05 remaining in the match to knot the game at 1-1.  Darriel Cannon and Steve Chaconas assisted Schollaert on the score.  Guilford appeared to have netted the game-winner with only 40 seconds showing on the game clock, but an offsides call erased the score and forced extra time.

Kalmoutis had eight saves in the match for Averett, while facing 26 Quaker shots.  His counterpart, Matt McCall, was credited with only three saves in eight shots faced.

The Cougars return to action on Tuesday when they host Ferrum College at 4 p.m. for their final home match of the season.  Guilford travels to Randolph-Macon Saturday for a 3 p.m. tilt with the Yellow Jackets.
