Greensboro, NC (02/22/03) -- Guilford's Jackie Hardenbergh (Oak Hill, VA/Paul VI) scored a career-high 17 points and added nine rebounds as the Quakers defeated visiting Washington and Lee Saturday, 68-50, in the regular-season finale for both Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) teams.
The Quakers' (19-6, 16-4 ODAC) ninth victory in 10 games extended their school-record home winning streak to 25 games. Guilford, ranked third in this week's NCAA Division III South region poll, improved to 20-1 all time against the Generals (3-21, 3-17 ODAC).
Guilford jumped out to a 26-5 lead thanks to a 20-0 run in the game's opening minutes. Juniors A.J. Robertson (Eden, NC/Morehead) and Jennie Keichline (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) each netted six points in the spurt. Washington and Lee's shots fell later in the half and it pulled to within 30-21 at halftime on sophomore Bethany Dannelly's (Raleigh, NC/Enloe) driving layup.
The Quakers gradually opened a 17-point cushion in the second half, but Washington and Lee's Emily Barker (Clifton, VA/Mount Vernon) heated up and scored seven straight points during a 10-3 Generals' run that made the score 48-38 with 7:36 remaining. Washington and Lee made only three field goals the rest of the way as Guilford pulled away.
Barker finished with a game-high 21 points, eight rebounds and three blocks for the Generals. Dannelly added 14 points and a game-high four assists. Washington and Lee played without leading scorer Sarah Michaels (Norfolk, VA/Norfolk Academy) and received no points off the bench, while Guilford's reserves accounted for 30 points.
Keichline came off the bench to score 16 points and Robertson finished with 12 markers, 10 in the first half. Guilford made 16 of 19 free throws for a season-high .842 percentage.
The Quakers earned the ODAC Tournament's top seed for the second straight season earlier in the week with a road win over Emory & Henry. Guilford plays number-eight Hollins Thursday (2/27) at 12:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals at the Salem (VA) Civic Center. The Quakers are the two-time defending tournament champions. Washington and Lee's season ended with today's defeat.
