Randolph-Macon Survives At Guilford In ODAC Men's Hoop Action, 52-50

Box Score

Greensboro, NC (02/03/03) -- Senior Jared Mills (Reading, PA/Reading Central Catholic) scored 12 of his game-high 13 points in the second half in visiting Randolph-Macon's 52-50 come-from-behind men's basketball win over Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Guilford Monday night.

Randolph-Macon, ranked third in the most recent d3hoops.com Division III poll, improves to 19-1 (12-1 ODAC) matching its best start since 1975. The Yellow Jackets have won nine straight against the Quakers (9-10, 5-7 ODAC), who fell for the first time in six home games.

The Yellow Jackets survived a late Guilford rally that included two potentially game-tying free throws by sophomore guard Clarence Martin (Reidsville, NC/Reidsville) with one second left in the game. Jamal Brunt's (Baltimore, MD/St. Frances Academy) second three-pointer of the half gave Randolph-Macon a 51-46 lead with 1:09 left. Guilford's Josh Connor (Greensboro, NC/Northwest Guilford) made two free throws with 31 seconds remaining. The Quakers sent Ryan Stein (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) to the line on the next possession where he missed two shots. The Yellow Jackets' Tim Smith (Jacksonville, MD/Old Mill (MD)) missed two free throws 15 seconds later and enabled Guilford's Jevon Clarke's (Apex, NC/Southeast Raleigh) layup to pull the Quakers to within 51-50 with 10 seconds remaining.

Clarke sent Mills to the line with nine seconds left where the he made just the first of two shots. Out of time-outs, Connor rebounded the second miss and fed Martin, who pushed the ball up court and drew a foul with one second left.

Following two consecutive Randolph-Macon time-outs, Martin stepped to the line and rattled the first shot off the back and front of the rim before it spun out. He missed the second shot intentionally, but neither team gained possession as time expired.

The Quakers, who lost for just the second time in seven games, gave Randolph-Macon all it could handle and led for most of the first half. The tightly contested defensive struggle featured four ties and seven lead changes. The Yellow Jackets scored the second-half's first six points for a short-lived lead, but Guilford recovered and held a narrow advantage until Randolph-Macon's Jim Silcox (Newton, NC/Newton-Conover) tied the contest at 38-38 with a free throw at the 10:01 mark. Mills' jumper 44 seconds later gave the Yellow Jackets the lead for good.

Randolph-Macon won despite shooting just 17-of-34 from the free-throw line and 33 percent from the field. Equal to the defensive task, the Yellow Jackets limited Guilford to under 31 percent field-goal shooting, including five-for-23 (.217) in the second half. Guilford made only three of 17 three-point attempts. Brunt scored seven of his 11 points in the second half for Randolph-Macon and freshman Justin Wansley (Richmond, VA/Henrico) added nine points off the bench, eight in the first half.

Clarke and Martin tallied 10 points apiece for the Quakers. Clarke corralled a team-high 11 caroms for his first career double-double.

Guilford's schedule doesn't get any easier as the Quakers host second-ranked Hampden-Sydney Wednesday (2/05) at 7:00 pm. The Tigers improved to 19-0 Monday with an 88-33 ODAC win at Eastern Mennonite. Randolph-Macon hosts Eastern Mennonite Wednesday (2/5) at 7:00 pm.
