Box Score Greensboro, NC -- Junior guard Kate Childress (Shawsville, VA/E. Montgomery) scored a game-high 23 points to lead visiting Emory & Henry to an 83-72 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win over Guilford Saturday.
Childress made five-of-seven three-pointers, including three in the opening half to help the Wasps (5-3, 3-1 ODAC) take a 42-36 halftime lead. Emory & Henry opened an 11-point lead with a 14-3 run midway through the period and pressed the Quakers into 13 first-half turnovers. Guilford played without starting point guard Dionne Graham (Savannah, GA/Jenkins) for the second straight game due to a knee injury.
Childress and junior Brooke Barker (Rogersville, TN/Cherokee) opened the second half with back-to-back three-pointers to give the guests a 12-point edge. Guilford got back to within six points early in the second period, but the Wasps answered with a 19-7 spurt for a commanding 71-53 edge with 7:41 left in the game.
Barker scored nine of her 11 points in the second half for Emory & Henry. Wasps' senior Amy Hensley (Rose Hill, VA/Thomas Walker) added 10 points and a game-high eight assists. Childress and senior Shannon Brown (Clifton Forge, VA/Alleghany) shared team-high rebounding honors with seven caroms apiece.
The Quakers (2-5, 0-3 ODAC) suffered their fifth straight loss for the first time since 1998-99 despite 20 points and a game-high 10 rebounds by senior forward Courtney Hill (Kannapolis, NC/North Rowan). Freshman btallied 14 points for the Quakers. Junior Jennifer King (Reidsville, NC/Rockingham County) and freshman Kendra Potter (Wise, VA/John I. Burton) each scored 12 points.
Guilford returns to action January 5 against Christopher Newport at 7:00 p.m. Emory & Henry visits Roanoke in an ODAC game January 6 at 7:00 p.m.
