Roanoke Wins Fifth Straight Women's Hoops Game, 70-56, at Guilford

Box Score

Greensboro, NC  -- Freshman Erin Hanson (Blacksburg, VA/Blacksburg) totaled 13 points and seven rebounds, both game highs, in visiting Roanoke's 70-56 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's basketball win at Guilford Thursday night. The Maroons' (8-4, 4-4 ODAC) fifth straight victory snapped a seven-game losing streak to Guilford (2-9, 0-6 ODAC) and extended the Quakers' losing skein to nine.

Guilford stayed with its guests for the first half, but Roanoke extended a five-point halftime lead to 12 points with outstanding free-throw shooting during a 12-5 half-opening run. During the spurt, Roanoke made all eight of its free throws and Hanson scored all six of her second-half points. The outside shooting that kept the Quakers in the game in the first half cooled in the second as Guilford made only two-of-12 shots from beyond the arc. A Dionne Graham (Savannah, GA/Jenkins) basket with 14:21 trimmed the Quakers' deficit to 50-42, but Guilford drew no closer.

Sophomore Cindy McGraw (Lynchburg, VA/EC Glass) buried three of Roanoke's four three-pointers and finished with 11 points and seven rebounds. Senior Chandra Forrester (Wytheville, VA/Rural Retreat) also scored 11 points, including seven in the second half. The Maroons converted Guilford's 17 turnovers into 26 points and yielded only 10 points off of their own 15 miscues.

Graham paced the Quakers with 12 points and added five rebounds. Senior Courtney Hill (Kannapolis, NC/North Rowan) and junior Jennifer King (Reidsville, NC/Rockingham County) each scored 11 points for Guilford. Quakers' rookie Rebecca Marshall (Trinity, NC/Trinity) totaled a career-high eight points and five rebounds off the bench.

The Quakers try to end their longest losing streak since 1981-82 Saturday (1/15) at league-rival Eastern Mennonite at 2:00 p.m. Roanoke seeks its sixth straight victory Saturday (1/15) at ODAC-foe Randolph-Macon Woman's College at 2:00 p.m.
