Box Score Norfolk, VA (11/2/05) -- Jennah Carter's record-breaking 23rd goal of the season lifted fourth-seeded Guilford College to a 1-0 upset win over top-seeded and previously unbeaten Virginia Wesleyan in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Women's Soccer Tournament semifinal Wednesday night.
The victory marks the school-record 13th of the season for the Quakers (13-5-3) and sends them to their first ODAC Soccer Tournament final in school history. Guilford is 6-0-2 in its last eight matches. The Marlins (18-1-1), who lost for the first time in 2005, entered the contest ranked fourth in the November 1st National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division III National Rankings.
Carter, a junior, took a through ball from junior back Diana Newman, outran two Marlins' defenders and beat Virginia Wesleyan goalie Lindsey Williams at the 56:42 mark of the second half. The tally broke the Guilford standard of 22 goals in a season, shared by Carter, Amy Evans '02 and Kimberly Mullen '05. Carter started the week atop the league scoring chart and ranked 19th among NCAA Division III scoring leaders. She has a team-high seven game-winning goals this season.
Virginia Wesleyan had a number of good scoring chances in the second half, but could not get a shot past Quakers goalie Danielle Brisotti. The senior made six saves for her fifth shutout of the season and the school-record 19th of her career. The Marlins outshot Guilford, 19-12, and enjoyed an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.
Coach Eric Lewis' Quakers advance to meet third-seeded Lynchburg for the ODAC title and the league's automatic NCAA Division III playoff bid. The Hornets reached the final with a 1-0 win at number-two Washington and Lee Wednesday and will host the final by virtue of their higher seed. The match will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Lynchburg's Shellenberger Field.
