Box Score Greensboro, NC (2/26/05) -- Junior attackers Katie Gilligan and Moira Foley scored three goals apiece in Guilford's 14-0 women's lacrosse win over visiting Averett Saturday in the Armfield Athletic Center. Freshman Devorah Litt made five saves for the Quakers' second women's lacrosse shutout in school history. Guilford blanked Trinity (DC), 25-0, March 8, 1997.
Gilligan scored the first three goals of the game as the Quakers (2-0) tallied 10 goals in the first 11:01. Once Guilford opened a 10-goal edge, the Quakers worked the clock for the rest of the game. Guilford led, 12-0, at halftime.
Eight different Quakers found the back of the net, including rookie attack Mary Hutchins, who tallied two goals and a game-high four assists. Gilligan assisted on two goals and rookie Caryn Washington contributed a goal and two assists.
Averett (0-1) goalie Dawn Sheets, a few days removed from playing basketball for Averett, made six saves and had four ground balls. Rookie Darcie Jones took five of the Cougars' six shots, including four free-position chances, and had five pickups.
Guilford, which is 2-0 for the first time since 1997, visits Sweet Briar Wednesday (3/2) at 4:30 p.m. in its Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener. Averett visits Methodist next Saturday (3/5).
