Hill's Buzzer Beater Lifts Guilford Women Past Eastern Mennonite, 56-55

Box Score

GREENSBORO, NC  -- Senior Courtney Hill's follow basket at the final buzzer lifted Guilford's women's basketball team to a 56-55 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win over visiting Eastern Mennonite Sunday afternoon. The thrilling victory gave the Quakers a sweep of the league double-header after Guilford's men's team posted a 101-91 decision over the Royals in Sunday's first game. The Quakers also swept two league basketball games from visiting Bridgewater Feb. 5.

Hill's heroics kept Guilford's women (8-13, 6-10 ODAC) from a painful defeat and squelched a tremendous Eastern Mennonite (15-7, 11-6 ODAC) rally. The Royals erased a 17-point second-half deficit and grabbed a 55-52 lead with 1:32 left in the game. Two free throws by Hill at the 52-second mark and two missed free throws by Eastern Mennonite's Amanda Renalds with 36 seconds left set up a wild finish. Following a Guilford time-out, the Quakers' Dionne Graham missed a shot with five seconds left, corralled her own long rebound and launched an errant three-pointer. Hill rebounded the miss and scored from close range as time expired for Guilford's third straight win and its fifth triumph in seven games.

The Quakers led, 46-29, with 11:48 left in the game, but Hill and freshman Brittiany Green got into foul trouble and the Royals started making shots. Green posted her third straight double-double with 18 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, but fouled out with five minutes left in the game. With Green on the bench, Guilford's offense struggled and Eastern Mennonite used a 26-6 run to take a 55-52 lead. Stephanie Mathews scored 10 of her 14 second-half points during the run and Renalds scored seven points for the Royals.

The Royals struggled against Guilford's zone defense and shot less than 29 percent from the floor. Mathews paced the ODAC's second-place team with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Renalds finished with 16 points and a team-high 11 boards. Miranda White knocked down three three-pointers and scored 12 points in 15 minutes off the bench.

Guilford's Hill scored 12 points and had six rebounds in 28 foul-plagued minutes. She became Guilford's 12th member of the 1,000-career points club on a first-half jumper. With 1,009 points in 87 career contests, Hill needs 20 points to move into 11th place on the Quakers' career scoring chart. She is 17 rebounds shy of becoming the seventh Guilford women's player with over 1,000 points and 600 caroms in her career. Graham, a point guard, scored 10 points and dished out five assists with only one turnover in just under 40 minutes.

Guilford closes a four-game homestand Tuesday (2/08) against league-rival Randolph-Macon Woman's College at 7:00 p.m. The Royals visit league-leading Randolph-Macon Saturday (2/12) at 2:00 p.m.
