King Carries Guilford Past Randolph-Macon Woman's College, 77-67

Box Score

GREENSBORO, NC (1/24/06) -- Senior guard Jennifer King scored 18 of her game-high 27 points in the second half to help Guilford turn back visiting Randolph-Macon Woman's College, 77-67, Tuesday night in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball game. The Quakers improve to 6-10 overall (5-6 ODAC) with their third straight win, while the Wildcats fall to 4-10 (3-8 ODAC). Guilford leads the all-time series with Randolph-Macon Woman's College, 31-1.

King's heroics helped the Quakers snuff out the Wildcats' rally that trimmed a 12-point second-half deficit to four with 1:09 left in the game. A Katie Spina jumper gave the hosts a 67-55 edge with 3:43 remaining, but the Wildcats tallied the next eight points on two Sara Rechnitzer three-pointers and a Meghan Stensrud layup. The teams traded baskets before Randolph-Macon Woman's College started fouling. King made all six free throw attempts in the final 1:08 and teammate Dionne Graham added two free throws to seal the victory.

Rechnitzer nearly matched King's scoring effort by netting 25 points, thanks in part to five three-pointers. Jennifer Prewitt poured in 15 of her 18 points in the second half and added a game-high nine rebounds, plus five assists. Many of her helpers went to Stensrud, who finished with 18 points, seven boards, seven assists, three blocks and two steals. The Wildcats made 45 percent of their shots and had 22 assists on 27 made field goals.

King, the reigning ODAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week, added six rebounds and four assists to another solid outing. Rookie Heather Koehler sparked the home team to a 17-point first-half lead by scoring eight of her 12 points in the first 20 minutes. Classmate Brittany Bumgarner also scored 12 points, including a key foul-line jumper with 1:41 left that restored Guilford's six-point edge. It turned out to be the Quakers' final field goal. Graham finished with 10 points, four assists and three steals.

Guilford continues its three-game home stand Saturday (1/28) against nationally ranked ODAC-rival Randolph-Macon. The Wildcats tangle with visiting Eastern Mennonite Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in a league tilt.
