Box Score Greensboro, N.C. (10/28/06) -- Senior Erin Rothweiler scored one goal and assisted another to help second-seeded Guilford past number-seven Randolph-Macon, 3-0, in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament quarterfinal match Saturday at Haworth Field.
With the win, the Quakers (13-5-2) match their school record for wins in a season and advance to the semifinal round for the third year in a row. Guilford hosts third-seeded Eastern Mennonite on Haworth Field Nov. 1 at a time to be announced. The Royals, the lone ODAC club to beat Guilford this year, downed sixth-seeded Lynchburg, 1-0, in another quarterfinal match Saturday night. Randolph-Macon ends its season with a 6-11 record.
After a scoreless first half where gusty winds got the best of both teams, Guilford got on the board in the 67th minute when sophomore Amanda Sperr tucked home Rothweiler's header under the hands of Randolph-Macon goalie Mary Jocelyn. The tally marked Sperr's third goal of the season.
Rothweiler added an insurance goal just over 11 minutes later when she knocked in Micki Boulineau's corner kick from five yards away. Rothweiler's fourth goal of the year gave Guilford a 2-0 lead with 11:12 remaining in the match.
Senior Rachel Gwin finished off the scoring with 3:36 left in the match with a long volley from 25 yards out that fell into the net beyond Terry's reach. Boulineau picked up her second assist of the game on the play.
Guilford outshot the Yellow Jackets, 15-2, and held its guests without a shot in the second half. Randolph-Macon's best scoring opportunities came late in the first half off the boots of Rachel Armstrong and Kendall Kirtley, but Guilford goalie Veronica Zych stopped both shots. Zych recorded her school-record eighth shutout of the season and her fourth in as many matches. She broke the former mark of seven shared by Danielle Brisotti '05 and Jen Harrison '91.
