Box Score

Lynchburg, VA (4/27/06) -- John Schoenholtz threw a complete-game eight-hitter and helped himself at the plate with three hits and three RBIs to lead second-seeded Hampden-Sydney past fifth-seeded Guilford Thursday in the first round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Baseball Tournament in Lynchburg, VA.

Schoenholtz improved to 8-2 with the win and allowed only a second-inning run to Guilford. The senior's two-run single in the first highlighted the Tigers' four-run first inning. Guilford starter Dave Whigham (8-3) struggled with his control early on, yielding four hits and two wild pitches in the first inning. He left in the fourth inning after giving up a season-high seven runs and three wild pitches.

Guilford scored its run in the second inning on Andrew Lerner's two-out single that scored Mike Chelenza, who had doubled. The Quakers rallied with three hits in the fourth inning, but Joe John was thrown out at home trying to score from second base on a Chelenza single. Schoenholtz settled in and retired nine of the next 10 batters.

John Apperson went 3-5 with an RBI and had an assist on John's out at home plate in the fourth inning. Chris Padgett added two hits for the Tigers and Todd Harrell was 1-4 with a two-run double in the fourth inning, Chelenza and Ricky Seabolt led Guilford with two hits apiece. Lerner was 1-3 with an RBI.

The Tigers, who are the defending ODAC Tournament champions, advance to a 7:00 contest Friday night against the winner of Thursday's Virginia Wesleyan-Randolph-Macon game. Guilford plays Washington and Lee Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. in the tournament's first elimination contest. Top-seeded Bridgewater defeated Washington and Lee, 5-2, in Thursday's first tournament game.
