W&L BASEBALL SPLITS WITH GUILFORD

LEXINGTON, VA (4/9/06) -- Junior second baseman David Miller collected a school-record tying five hits (5-for-5), including a double, with two runs and two RBI to help lead the Washington and Lee baseball team to a 6-4 win over Guilford in the second game of an ODAC doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field. The Quakers won the first game, 5-0.

In game two, the Quakers (18-13, 6-7) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings, but the Generals (15-9-1, 8-5) tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third frame on RBI doubles by Miller and senior shortstop Scott Gosselink.

W&L then plated single runs in the fifth and sixth innings and two more runs in the seventh on a run scoring single by Gosselink and a sacrifice fly by junior designated hitter Richard Garland to push its advantage to 6-2. In the top of the ninth inning, Guilford pulled to within 6-4 on a two-run single by senior designated hitter Jeff Arzonico, but was unable to score the tying runs.

Gosselink finished 2-for-5 with a double, a run and two RBI, while freshman rightfielder Terrence McKelvey batted 1-for-1 with a double, three walks and two runs. Junior lefthander Johnson Brownlow pitched the first six innings, allowing two earned runs on nine hits to pick up the win (2-1). Sophomore lefthander John Parker notched the last three outs to earn his first save of the season.

Guilford was led by junior shortstop Ricky Seabolt, who went 4-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs. Arzonico finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Junior Logan Collier gave up four earned runs on seven hits in six innings to suffer the loss (2-3).

In game one, the Quakers took a 1-0 lead after the second inning and increased their advantage to 3-0 in the third frame on a two-run homerun by senior first baseman Rob Bittner. Guilford closed out the scoring with single tallies in the fourth and sixth innings for the 5-0 win.

W&L was led by Garland, who went 1-for-3 with a double. Junior righthander Clayton Edwards allowed five runs, three earned, on six hits with five strikeouts in the complete game loss (6-1).

For the Quakers, Bittner finished 2-for-4 with the homerun and two RBI, while junior third baseman Mike Chelenza batted 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Junior righthander Dave Whigham gave up three hits with nine strikeouts in a complete game shutout victory (6-2).

W&L returns to the diamond on Monday when it travels to Dickinson for a 3:00 pm contest.  Guilford returns home for a 4:00 p.m. ODAC match against Roanoke on Tuesday (4/11).
