Bridgewater Holds Off Guilford In ODAC Men's Hoops Tournament Upset

Box Score

Salem, Va. (2/22/07) -- Sophomore forward Michael Oblitely scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds off the bench in seventh-seeded Bridgewater's 88-78 upset of number-two Guilford in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournment Thursday night. The loss snaps Guilford's (21-4) seven-game winning streak and jeopardizes the Quakers' NCAA Tournament chances.

Bridgewater (10-16) jumped out to a 45-21 halftime lead thanks to 50 percent shooting from the floor and from three-point land. Oblitely made all three of his first-half three-point shots and the Eagles made eight-of-16 trifectas as a team. At the other end, Guilford managed only seven-of-26 (26.9%) field-goal shooting and turned the ball over nine times in the opening half.

Guilford came out pressing in the second half and forced 10 of the Eagles' 13 turnovers in the second 20 minutes. The defense created some easy scoring chances and Guilford started making three-pointers, which chipped away at Bridgewater's lead. A Clay Henson three-pointer with 5:03 left in the game capped a 31-13 Quakers' run and made it a 66-60 Bridgewater edge.

Guilford drew no closer as the teams traded baskets for the next two minutes before the Quakers were forced to foul. The Eagles made 12-of-16 free throws in the final 2:39 to seal the win. Junior forward Josh Fox scored half of his 14 points from the stripe in that time.

Freshman D.J. Billups scored 13 points and Andrew Cathlin added 12 points off the bench for the Eagles. Bridgewater's reserves outscored Guilford's, 51-30.

Caleb Kimbrough scored a career-high 20 points for Guilford, 13 in the second half. ODAC Player of the Year Ben Strong notched his league-leading 16th double-double with 15 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Justin Strickland scored 13 points and dished out five assists off the bench. First Team All-ODAC pick Jordan Snipes was held to two points before fouling out midway through the second half.

Bridgewater advances to play fifth-seeded Hampden-Sydney, a 102-100 winner over number-four Emory & Henry earlier in the day. The NCAA Tournament teams will be announced late Sunday (2/25) night.
