Salem, Va. (4/24/07) --The Roanoke College women's lacrosse team advanced in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament with a 10-7 win over Guilford in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. The Maroons improve to 13-2 on the season, while the Quakers have their season come to an end with an 8-9 overall mark. The Maroons next play Randolph-Macon in the semifinals on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in Lexington, VA.

Just seconds into the game it was Guilford that jumped out to a lead. Carrie Ernst won the opening draw control, moved through the Maroon defense and scored with just 14 elapsed in the game. After Chelsea Rankin scored an unassisted goal to make the score 1-1, the Quakers again went on top, this time getting a transition goal from Jordan Clodfelter with 25:37 on the clock.

Roanoke junior Amanda Hutchins scored three consecutive unassisted goals and with 11:56 left in the first half the Maroons led 4-2. The Maroons' lead grew to three goals four minutes later when freshman Sunni Ray rolled away from a defender on the crease and scored her 16th goal of the season.

Sophomore Bianca Catta-Preta scored with 1:41 left in the first half to give the Maroons a 6-3 lead, but again Ernst took advantage of a favorable draw, getting possession and scoring just eight seconds later. The game went into the break with Roanoke leading 6-4.

The Maroons' defense held the Quakers off the board for the first 23 minutes of the second half and in the process the Maroons were able to extend their lead out to 9-4. Senior defender Katharine DiNinno scored the first of the three straight Maroon goals to open the second, going coast-to-coast to score her first career goal. Guilford scored three of the last four goals to pull to within 10-7 late in the contest.

The Maroons outshot Guilford 37-26 in the game, but Quakers' goalie Jessica Bolton matched her career high with 14 saves, 10 in the first half. Roanoke's Hutchins led all scorers in the game with five points, all five coming on goals. Rachel Hutchinson and Alida Haslett each caused three turnovers for the Maroons. Ernst finished with the two goals and Allison Brown added a goal and an assist for Guilford.
