Box Score Greensboro, N.C. (1/23/08) -- Exactly one week after Roanoke College knocked Guilford from the national rankings, the host Quakers tried to return the favor in Wednesday's 92-56 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball win over the Maroons in the Ragan-Brown Field House. The Quakers (10-4, 5-2 ODAC) jumped out to a 45-16 halftime lead and never looked back for their sixth win in eight games.
Guilford's victory pulled it even in the ODAC standings with Roanoke (11-3, 5-2 ODAC), which debuted in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll in 24th place. The setback ended Roanoke's seven-game winning streak, the school's longest since 1999-00, and gave Guilford a split of the season series. The Maroons held the Quakers to a season-low 56 points and 23.6 percent field-goal shooting their 68-56 victory in Salem, Va., Jan. 16.
The Quakers made nine of their first 13 field goals and raced to a 24-3 lead 11 minutes into the game. While Guilford couldn't miss, the Maroons made just one field goal in the game's first 12:36. Quakers' senior Caleb Kimbrough scored all 10 of his points in the first half. The Maroons made five-of-26 (19.2%) field goals in the opening period and made 14 turnovers, leading to 16 Quakers' points.
"I thought we came out with a lot of energy today and obviously it helps being on your home floor," Guilford head coach Tom Palombo said. "We were embarrassed last Wednesday and I'm sure that had a lot to do with our guys. It shows how much pride our guys have... we came out and basically dominated from start to finish."
Five Guilford students scored in double figures for the second straight game, which helped the Quakers win by their biggest margin the 46-game series with the Maroons. Seniors Ben Strong and Eric Belkoski both scored 15 points and sophomore guard Rhett Bonner added a career-high 13 points off the bench. Kimbrough and sophomore guard Clay Henson scored 10 points apiece. Henson shared game-high rebounding honors with a career-high eight and dished out a game-best five assists. Strong also had five helpers, plus six boards and three blocked shots.
