Guilford Defeats Emory & Henry, 86-74, Stays Alive For ODAC Tournament

Box Score

Greensboro, N.C. (2/19/08) -- Freshman Lauren LeFevers exploded for a career-high 31 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds leading Guilford to a 86-74 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win over visiting Emory & Henry College Tuesday night in the Ragan-Brown Field House. The win and season-sweep of the Wasps keeps the Quakers' hopes for the final spot in the upcoming ODAC Tournament alive. The 31 points is the most by a Guilford student-athlete since Jennifer King's '06 32 points against Virginia Wesleyan College, January 2006.

The game was closely contested during the first half with 10 ties and six lead changes, but Guilford (11-13, 6-13 ODAC) ended the period with a 42-39 lead. The Quakers shot a blistering 48.3 percent from the floor including 11-13 from the free throw line in the half while holding Emory & Henry (8-16, 6-13 ODAC) to 36.1% and 8-12 from the charity stripe.

Junior Tracey Croner netted 13 points and pulled down six rebounds while sophomores Jasmine Wood and Ann Seufer scored 12 points each joining LeFevers as Guilford's double-digit scorers for the game. Seufer also tied her own school record with her 59th converted 3-pointer of the season.

Guilford's hot shooting poured over to the second half as they built a 14-point lead over Emory & Henry deep into the second half. The Wasps rallied behind the efforts of Sarah Petty's 16 points, 11 assists and a game-high eight rebounds to cut the margin to just five points with 1:34 remaining in the game. However the Quakers converted eight of 10 free throws in the final 90 seconds to seal the game away.

Krista Haynes team-high 17 points led the way for the Wasps as four different student-athletes netted double-digit points for Emory & Henry. She was joined by Brittany Rogers' 14 points and Alex Lyons' 12 points and seven rebounds. Samantha Shepard also grabbed eight bounds as the Wasps outrebounded the Quakers 50-40 in the loss.

The Quakers travel to play Randolph College Friday (2/22), while Emory & Henry hosts Washington and Lee University in 7:00 p.m. league matchups. Both games could determine the final seed in the upcoming ODAC Tournament.
