Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. (1/28/09) - Clay Henson scored 15 second-half points to help Guilford College past visiting Roanoke College, 77-72, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball action. Guilford rookie Gabriel Lowder scored all of his 11 points in the second half as the Quakers (14-4, 7-2 ODAC) moved past the Maroons (15-4, 7-3 ODAC) into second place in the ODAC standings.
Behind three three-pointers in the final minute, Roanoke trimmed an 11-point deficit to three with three seconds left, but Guilford's Rhett Bonner's two free throws provided the final margin.
Bonner hit for 13 first-half points, which helped Guilford overcome Roanoke's early six-point lead and take a 26-21 edge at halftime. Parrish Walker knocked down his second of three second-half three-pointers at the 15-minute mark to tie the game at 36-36.
The teams traded baskets before Roanoke's Curtis Peery tied the game for the fifth and final time at 42-42 with 10:06 remaining. Henson answered with a three-pointer, which triggered a decisive 12-1 Quakers' run over the next 2:02, in which Henson scored seven points.
Drew Gaeng's three-pointer at the other end helped keep Roanoke in the game, but Lowder scored eight straight points over a two-and-a-half minute stretch to thwart the Maroons' comeback. Lowder's hot hand and 13-for-16 shooting from the line in the final 1:23 kept Guilford ahead.
Bonner's game-high 21 points paced four Quakers in double-figure scoring. Henson finished with 17 points. Teammate Tyler Sanborn notched his career- and team-best 11th double-double of the season with 19 points, a game-high 12 boards and three blocks.
Peery scored 12 of his 18 points in the second half and shared game-high rebounding honors with Sanborn. Walker scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half before some hometown fans. Melvin Felix finished with 16 points, 10 in the second half. Roanoke shot just under 53 percent from the floor in the second period, but turned the ball over seven times, which led to 13 Quakers' points in the second half.
The victory sets up a showdown for first place in the ODAC Saturday (1/31) in Guilford's Ragan-Brown Field House. Guilford hosts Randolph-Macon College (14-4, 8-1 ODAC) in the lone regular-season meeting between the two teams. Roanoke, which beat Guilford by four Jan. 13 in Salem, hosts Lynchburg College Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.
