Williams Shines in Quakers' OT Win Over Bridgewater

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. (1/9/09) - Guilford College rallied from a nine-point second-half deficit and held visiting Bridgewater College without a field goal in overtime to claim a 69-61 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's basketball win Friday night.

Senior Tracey Croner scored six of her 12 points in extra time to help the Quakers (5-6, 4-2 ODAC) end a seven-game losing skid to the Eagles (4-6, 2-3 ODAC) that dated to 2005. Three of Guilford's four ODAC wins this season have come in overtime.

Four straight points by Bridgewater's Emileigh Lambert opened a 41-32 Eagles' edge with 17:50 left in the game. The Quakers slowly crept back into the game and took their first lead since the middle of the first half on Lauren LeFevers' basket with 4:16 left in regulation. An Ann Seufer three-pointer from NBA range that spun around the rim at least three times opened a 59-55 Quakers' edge with 1:53 remaining.

The Eagles' strong offensive rebounding led to a Rebecca Henderson basket with 1:26 left and Lambert's game-tying shot with 43 seconds left after she corralled a Kristin Bosserman miss. Guilford's LeFevers missed at the other end and after a Bridgewater timeout, the Eagles' Lacey Barnett lost the ball out of bounds with five seconds left, effectively sending the game into overtime.

Croner opened the overtime scoring with two free throws and then scored a layup off of one of Jessica Casto'sgame-high five assists for a 63-59 Guilford edge. Croner made two more free throws, which opened a six-point Guilford lead before Jordan Burkholder got the Eagles on the board in overtime with one of two free throws with 1:48 left. Jenny Logan went one-for-two from the line 26 seconds later, but Bridgewater drew no closer as the Eagles missed all 12 field-goal attempts in overtime.

Guilford's Alexa Williams enjoyed her finest game of the season with 16 points and a team-high nine rebounds off the bench. LeFevers and Seufer added 11 points apiece and combined for six of Guilford's seven three-pointers.

Burkholder led all scorers with 17 points and also had six rebounds and three steals. Lambert finished with 12 points and 11 boards for a double-double. Henderson added eight points, plus 13 rebounds and five blocks, both game highs. Jennifer Saunders contributed 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Bridgewater outrebounded Guilford, 54-42, and scored 23 second-chance points off of 21 offensive boards.

The Quakers host Eastern Mennonite University Saturday (1/10) in a 4:00 p.m. ODAC game. Bridgewater visits league-rival Emory & Henry College Saturday (1/10) at 4:00 p.m.
