Late Free Throws Lift Quakers Past Virginia Wesleyan

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. (2/21/09) - Jessica Casto's two free throws with 8.3 seconds remaining in regulation broke a 57-57 tie and lifted Guilford College to a 61-57 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win over Virginia Wesleyan College Saturday afternoon. The victory sets up a quarterfinal round matchup between the same teams in the ODAC Tournament Thursday (2/26) night in the Salem (Va.) Civic Center.

Virginia Wesleyan (17-8, 14-6 ODAC) erased an 11-point second-half deficit and tied the game on a Jocelyn Spencer layup with 1:12 to play. The teams traded scoreless possessions before Casto, a point guard, took the ball the length of the floor and drew a foul driving to the basket. Following a Marlins' time-out, the senior drained both free throws to give Guilford the lead.

Following another Virginia Wesleyan time-out, the Marlins' Tonia Jones attempted a similar maneuver and drove the length of the floor before Guilford's Alexa Williams stole the ball in the lane. Williams was quickly fouled and sealed the win by making both free throws with 1.1 seconds left.

Williams, who scored 11 of her 14 points in the second half, led all scorers. Senior Tracey Croner matched her career high with a game-best 11 rebounds and scored 13 points for her first double-double of the season. She also surpassed 1,000 points for her career in the first half and became the 14th member of Guilford's 1,000-career points club. Croner stands 14th in school history with 1,007 points in 76 games. Casto and Jasmine Wood scored eight points apiece.

Casto, Croner, Brittany Bumgarner and Shevon Hackett, all seniors, were honored before the game on the occasion of their final regular-season home contest.

Shawnee Lewis sparked the Marlins' second-half comeback with all 10 of her points in the final period, thanks in part to three-for-three shooting from three-point land. Teammate Bryttani Payton hit nine of her game-high 13 points in the second half and Spencer finished with 10, eight in the final period.  Andrea Ushinski totaled nine points and a team-high eight rebounds.

The two teams split the regular-season series and will meet again Thursday (2/21) night at 8:00 p.m. in Salem. The Marlins are seeded third in the eight-team field, while Guilford is seeded sixth.
