Guilford Falls to #14 Washington and Lee, 15-4

GREENSBORO, N.C. (4/14/09) - Katie Flippen and Britten Mathews both scored four goals in visiting Washington and Lee University's 15-4 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) lacrosse victory at Guilford College Tuesday. The Generals are ranked 14th in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association NCAA Division III Poll and improve to 10-4 overall (7-1 ODAC).

Mathews and Flippen both tallied twice in the Generals' game-opening 6-0 run that set the tone for the rest of the game. Guilford's Hannah Merrell dent the twine for the Quakers (5-10, 2-5 ODAC) with 6:17 left in the half to make it a 6-1 game. Washington and Lee's Emmy Mathews closed out the first-half scoring with her second tally of the period for a 7-1 Generals' edge at halftime.

Washington and Lee converted seven-of-14 free-position opportunities, including six-of-nine in the second half. The Generals outshot the hosts, 41-14, and picked up 12 more ground balls than the Quakers. Emmy Mathews finished with three goals and caused three Quakers' turnovers. Meredith Freeman added a goal and two assists for Washington and Lee, which had seven different goal scorers. Katharine Farrar had four saves in just over 38 minute in goal. Backup Jennifer Linder also made four saves.

Four different Quakers scored in the match, including Carrie Ernst, who added an assist and two caused turnovers. Shelly Nogueira had two assists and won a game-best six draw controls. Jennifer Abelin scooped up a career- and game-high nine ground balls, three shy of the school record. Alyzza May-Callahan went the distance in goal and recorded 16 saves and four ground balls.

Guilford concludes its regular season Thursday (4/16) at Sweet Briar College with a 4:30 p.m. ODAC match. The Generals host Colorado College Saturday (4/18) at 10:00 a.m. in a nonleague contest.
