Box Score 2 GREENSBORO, N.C. (4/19/09) - Terrence McKelvey's two-run, two-out homer in the sixth inning rallied Washington and Lee University past Guilford College in the opening game of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader Sunday. The Generals' 10-7 comeback win in the opener clinched the sixth and final position in the upcoming ODAC Tournament and eliminated the Quakers from contention. Guilford won the nightcap, 13-9.
The Quakers (18-19, 7-11 ODAC) entered Sunday's game needing to win both games to earn their first ODAC Tournament bid since 2006. McKelvey hit his first homer of the game in the third inning and Drew Dezen added a two-out, two-RBI triple in the fourth inning to help Washington and Lee (18-12, 9-9 ODAC) to a 5-3 lead. Guilford sent nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the fifth and scored four runs for a 7-5 edge.
Washington and Lee pulled to within 7-6 on Dezen's RBI double in the sixth. After Guilford starter Michael Blocher fanned C.J. Thompson for the second out of the inning, left-hander Trey Daniel (0-1) entered to face the left-handed McKelvey, who was already three-for-three with a triple and homer. McKelvey hit Daniel's 3-2 offering over the right-field fence for his second homer of the game and an 8-7 Generals' edge. John Ditore followed with a double and Will Lewis hit another homer to provide the game's final margin. Senior Brendan Clark fanned three in two perfect innings of relief to earn his second save of the season and clinch the win.
McKelvey was four-for-four with three RBI and four runs scored from his leadoff position. Ditore was three-for-three with two doubles and an RBI batting second. Dezen went two-for-four with three RBI.
Kyle Wooden paced Guilford's offense with three hits, including a two-run homer in the first, and four RBI. Alex Starbuck added two hits, including an RBI single in the fifth.
Josh Sumler's sixth-inning grand slam highlighted Guilford's 16-hit attack in the nightcap. Sumler's one-out blast opened a 12-5 Guilford lead. Wooden had four more hits and another home run, his team-leading 10th of the season. John Goodwin had three hits and scored two runs. The offensive output helped Guilford starter Adam Hart (5-2) pitch into the ninth inning and record a career-high 11 strikeouts. He was lifted for David Thomson after the Generals scored twice and put the tying run on deck. Thomson struck out Ben Thomas to end the game and earn his first college save.
Ditore was three-for-five with a two-run double in the ninth for Washington and Lee. Lewis also had three hits and scored three times.
Guilford closes the season Tuesday (4/21) against NCAA Division II-member Bluefield State College in a game rescheduled from Apr. 14. Washington and Lee opens ODAC Tournament play Thursday (4/23) against top-seeded Lynchburg College at 11:00 a.m. at Lynchburg City Stadium.
