Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. (4/8/09) - Lindsay Gengras scored 2:24 into the second overtime period to give visiting Lynchburg College a 17-16 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's lacrosse victory over Guilford College Wednesday night.
The tightly played match saw six ties and three Guilford (5-9. 2-4 ODAC) rallies to force extra time. Emily McMillan scored her fourth goal of the night with 4:08 left in regulation before the Quakers' Summer Frazier tallied twice to send the game into overtime. Frazier scored with 2:03 remaining and converted a Shelly Nogueira feed 15 seconds later, which knotted the score at 14-14. Lynchburg (6-6, 1-3 ODAC) won the ensuing draw control and set up for a final shot, which Guilford's Alyzza-May Callahan stopped from close range.
Deana Welsch won the overtime's opening draw and Lynchburg controlled possession for the first 2:22 of the period before Patty Sheahan converted a free-position shot with 3:38 left in overtime. Frazier tied the game again for Guilford 34 seconds later off an assist from Sarah Bradburd.
After the teams traded sides, Guilford's Julia Fraser hit the post with a shot. Lynchburg recovered and scored at the other end on a Kathryn Ollice tally. The Hornets won the ensuing draw, but Jennifer Abelin forced her fourth turnover of the game and the Quakers' Carrie Ernst tied the score with 25 seconds left in the first overtime.
Lynchburg won the draw in the sudden-victory (second) overtime period and got two free-position shots in the first minute. An Ollice shot sailed wide and Callahan stopped Morgan Logue with 2:20 remaining. The Quakers failed to clear the zone as Welsch forced a turnover, which Logue recovered. After Guilford's 46th foul of the game, McMillan took two steps to her right and fed the cutting Gengras, who beat Callahan from about two meters out.
Welsch totaled five goals and seven ground balls, both game highs, plus four draw controls. McMillan finished with four goals and an assist off the bench, while Sheahan added three scores. Christina Tran made 11 saves in goal for the Hornets, who outshot the Quakers, 46-32, and scored on seven of 20 free-position attempts.
Ernst and Frazier both scored four times for Guilford, which slipped to 0-2 in overtime games this year. Nogueira had three goals, two assists and five ground balls. Abelin picked up six ground balls and caused four turnovers. Callahan had 14 stops in goal.
The Quakers are back in action April 14 against nationally ranked Washington and Lee University in a 4:00 p.m. ODAC match. Lynchburg visits Virginia Wesleyan College next Wednesday night in a 7:00 p.m. league game.
