Box Score 2 GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College's volleyball team split its opening matches at the Greensboro College Invitational Saturday. The Quakers (2-4) fell to the host Pride in their opening match, 3-1, but rebounded to topple Hollins University later in the day, 3-1.
In the opener, Guilford raced to a 25-17 lead in the opening game, but Greensboro rallied and reeled off wins in the next three games, 25-16, 25-16 and 25-18. Guilford's Kelsey Ruehling had a double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs, but hit just .051 for the match. Taylor Creed added seven kills and six digs. Maile Munro contributed 27 assists and 11 pickups.
Greensboro's Liz Widenhouse notched a game-high 14 kills, plus 11 digs for Greensboro (4-3).
The Quakers claimed a 25-16, 23-25, 25-17, 25-16 victory over Hollins. Ruehling's 11 kills led the way, but Guilford got strong contributions from rookies Creed and Davis. Creed had nine kills, as did Davis. Davis had just one error and hit .348 in the contest and added 12 digs and a service ace. Steffi Dutton picked up a game-high 14 digs and Munro chipped in another double=double with 15 assists and 10 digs.
Jessie Deese's nine kills and 14 digs led Holins (1-4).
Guilford wraps up tournament play Sunday (9/7) versus Piedmont College and Agnes Scott College. All matches are held at Greensboro's Hanes Gym.
