Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College's men's lacrosse team held visiting Catholic University of America to two second-half goals in a 12-6 nonconference win Saturday afternoon on Appenzeller Field in the Armfield Athletic Center.
The Quakers (3-0) led 5-4 at halftime thanks to all three of junior Adam Fiore's goals. The Cardinals (4-2) Conor Bruno and Tim Keith netted the second quarter's final two goals, which drew the guests to within 5-4 at halftime.
Guilford's Dylan Haupt opened the second-half scoring with the first of his two goals, both in the second half. Quakers' defender Jake Sadd scored in transition off an Ian Wiesenberg assist and Daniel Haupt followed less than a minute later with an unassisted goal that gave Guilford an 8-4 lead, their largest to that point.
Catholic's Jake Oakes and Victor Licata netted consecutive goals to end the third-quarter scoring and pull the Cardinals to within 8-6 entering the final quarter.
Guilford's defense clamped down and kept Catholic scoreless. The Cardinals also turned the ball over seven times in the final frame, during which time Guilford's offense got goals from four different students. The Quakers' man-down unit, which killed off all nine Catholic extra-man chances, came up big in the fourth quarter, most notably when Guilford goalie Thomas Deane was sent off for a minute midway through the period with his team ahead, 10-6. Reserve goalie Garrison Goth entered and made two big saves as Guilford survived the minute-long disadvantage. A minute after killing off Deane's penalty, Guilford went ahead on a Juquan Tellis goal.
Fiore's three goals paced a balanced scoring effort that saw eight different Quakers combine for 12 goals. Dylan Haupt and Alex Brownlee both scored twice. In addition to netting his second goal of the season, Sadd picked up six ground balls and caused two turnovers. Deane finished with nine saves and three ground balls.
Licata scored twice to lead the Cardinals' offense. Matt Michalski controlled the face-off circle, winning 15 of the game's 15 draws and collecting a game-high seven ground balls. Harrison Holak had a solid game in goal with 13 saves and three ground balls.
