GC Loses Out in 2-1 Battle with EMU

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Guilford College men's soccer battled hard in a 2-1 loss to Eastern Mennonite on Saturday evening.

THE BASICS

  • Score: Eastern Mennonite 2, Guilford 1

  • Records:  EMU 2-14 (2-6 ODAC), Guilford 5-9 (0-8 ODAC)

  • Location: Appenzeller Field at the Armfield Athletic Center - Greensboro N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Prior to the contest Guilford took time to honor its four seniors; Victor Jimenez, Rodrigo Gudino, Giovanni Santibanez and Ben James

  • The visiting Royals were able to post their first goal of the game at 19:03 as Ford DeVault did all the work himself, carrying the ball up the middle of the field to beat the defender guarding him and the Quaker keeper.

  • After trailing 1-0 to start the second half, Guilford saw its first solid goal opportunity as a Riley Copeland corner insert found its way onto goal. Sadly, the shot bounced off the goalkeeper's head and out.

  • At one point in the beginning of the second stanza the crowd broke out in a "We want Gio!" chant, calling for Santibanez to be put into the game. It worked as the senior was substituted in at 61:59.

  • GC finally scored at 62:26 as Logan Eure was able to use a busy net front to his advantage. It was Ryan Doyle who owned the cross that set up the play.

  • EMU went up 2-0 at 77:10 as a Royal was able to go crossbar down on Roman Robinson

  • GC's last solid scoring attempt came at 84:36 as a Jasper Ardinger near side throw-in found its way to Copeland. The junior took the insert up the field, defeating his defender and sending the ball into the right-90. His shot was stopped in impressive fashion, as the keeper was able to make the save by the skin of his finger tips.
