Box Score GUILFORD, N.C. – The nationally-ranked Hampden-Sydney College lacrosse team scored the first 11 goals of the contest en route to a 20-12 win over Guilford College on Tuesday afternoon in Greensboro, NC.
The Tigers did not concede a goal until 8:42 left in the second quarter in the victory. Hampden-Sydney improved to 10-1 overall and 7-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, while the Quakers fall to 2-3 overall and 2-3 in league play.
Jared Medwar scored three of the first 11 goals of the game for the Tigers, but Guilford scored five goals in a six-goal stretch, trimming the lead to 12-5. Conner Kocher put the Quakers on the board with an up goal, which was followed by strikes from Connor Sweeney, Brennan Sweeney, Bailey Benjamin and Jax Atkins.
The Tigers closed out the first half with three straight goals, assuming a 15-5 lead in the process. Connor Sweeney and Nick Honkomp netted the first goals of the second half for Guilford, briefly making for a 15-7 contest, but Hampden-Sydney answered with five straight to assume the 20-7 lead.
Two of the final five goals from Guilford came from Derek Zacatenco, while Connor Sweeney, Bryce Craig and Justin Barry added one each.
The Tigers attempted 47 shots in the clash, 33 shots on goal, while Guilford came through with 44 shots (27 SOG). Five goalies took to the field for Hampden-Sydney, amassing 15 saves along the way. Jack Rogers (12 saves) and Rece Vaughn (1) logged time in net for the Quakers.
Guilford will now host Washington & Lee on Wednesday, April 28th at 4 p.m.
