The Guilford College men's basketball team hit the hardwood for the first time in 13 days. The Quakers looked like they did not miss a beat as they defeated the Roanoke Maroons, 58-53.
The game started with the first three minutes going scoreless until
Liam Ward scored the first five points of the game.
Julius Burch followed with a layup to give Guilford (7-3, 3-0) a 7-0 at the 14:10 mark.
Roanoke (9-3, 1-2) slowly chipped away at the deficit and trailed by two (11-9) with 8:21 to go in the first half.
Both teams went back-and-forth until the Quakers closed out the first half on an 8-2 run with two three-point shots by
Jaylen Gore. GC led 34-22 as both teams headed to the locker room.
The Maroons opened the second half by scoring nine-straight to trail 34-31at the 16:32 mark. Guilford responded with five-straight points of its own that kicked off a 13-2 run.
Trailing 47-33, Roanoke out scored the Quakers 14-5 over the next six minutes to pull within five (52-47) with under two minutes to go in regulation.Â
However, that would be the closest the visitors got to tying the game. GC went 6-8 from the free throw line to secure the five-point victory.
Tyler Dearman led the way with 22 points while
Liam Ward finished with a double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Both teams shot 32-percent from the field while the Quakers corralled 47 rebounds compared to 46 for the Maroons.
Guilford travels to Eastern Mennonite on Saturday, January 15. Start time is set for 4:30 p.m.
