Quakers outlast Royals in ODAC Action

The Guilford College Quakers welcomed the Eastern Mennonite Royals for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) matchup. The Quakers were able to outlast the Royals in a tightly contested matchup, 67-62.

Entering the fourth period, Guilford (3-6, 1-4) held a 12-point advantage, 54-42. Eastern Mennonite (4-7, 0-5) opened the period with an 11-3 run to cut the deficit to four (57-53). A layup by Abby Kennedy put the Quakers ahead by six but the Royals were not done.

EMU then scored six-straight to even the game at 59 with 3:15 to go in regulation. GC made three of its four free throw attempts to go up 62-59. The Royals' Mya Hamlet hit a jumper to pull her team within one but the Quakers were steady at the charity stripe making thee of the next four attempts and eventually going up 65-62 with 24 seconds on the clock.

After a timeout, Eastern Mennonite tried to even the score with a three but a block by Courtney McMillan and two Ashtyn Zeigler free throws sealed the win. Guilford hung on for the five-point victory.

The Quakers were led by Lindsay Gauldin as she finished with 20 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals. Caroline Wilkerson added 14 points while McMillan nearly had a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.

In the first half, it was a back-and-forth affair. EMU jumped to an early lead but GC slowly chipped away and tied the game at 12 at the end of the first. The second period was very similar but near the end, the Quakers closed the period on a 10-0 run to lead 33-29 at the break.

Eastern Mennonite was led by Brii Redfearn and Hamlet as they scored 21 and 19 points, respectively. The Quakers held advantage in rebounds (48-38) and scored 23 second chance points and had 18 points come from the bench.
