The Guilford College women's volleyball team hosted Shenandoah University on Senior Day. The Quakers fell to the Hornets, 3-2. Prior to the match, Guilford honored its seniors
Cam Blankenship and
Hannah Stout.
The first set was battle of runs with each side exchanging leads. Late in the set, Shenandoah pulled within one (22-21) but an error and two
Kaci Johnson kills secured the set win, 25-21.
In the second, the Hornets used a 6-0 run to jump out to a 9-3 advantage. The Quakers battled back throughout the set and were within striking distance (24-23). Unfortunately, a service error won the set for the visitors, 25-23.
Shenandoah repeated its performance in the third with an 8-1 stretch to open an eight-point edge (19-11). GC responded with a 5-0 run including three aces from Amber Chairolanzio as it trailed 21-17. The Quakers tried to cut the deficit even smaller but were unable to do so as the Hornets took the set, 25-20.
Guilford took control of the fourth set early by using multiple runs of three or more points GC won the set, 25-17, and forced a fifth and final set.
Early in the fifth, the Hornets grasped early control and led 8-4 as the two squads switched sides on the court. The Quakers came out and won nine of the next 11 points to lead 13-10. SU battled back and evened the set at 13 but a
Natalie Moore kill put GC just a point away from winning the match.
As Moore served the ball, Shenandoah struggled with the reception but kept the play alive. As the visitors sent the ball over the net, it fell into no man's land as they tied the set at 14. The Hornets kept the momentum and won the final two points to win the set (16-14) and the match (3-2).
Johnson and Moore led the offense with 19 and 16 kills, respectively. Blankenship added 13 kills while
Maddi Page tallied 47 assists. With that amount, Page surpassed 1,000 assists in her Guilford career.Â
Guilford hits the road on Thursday, October 20 as it faces Ferrum College. Start time is set for 6:30 p.m.
