The Guilford College women's soccer team faced the Roanoke College Maroons. After 90 minutes of intense action, the Quakers came out on top, 2-1.
From the opening whistle, play between both sides was aggressive. Roanoke placed the first two shots on goal but
Ady Franken made both saves. In the 21st minute,
Madison Green made a play around a defender and took a shot from about 25 yards out. The ball bent around the netminder into the left side of the net to give GC the 1-0 edge.
The Maroons kept the pressure on and it paid off at the 31:43 mark as they scored off a free kick into the box. The game remained tied as it went to the half.
In the second half, the physical play continued as the two squads combined for six yellow cards. With a little more than five minutes left in regulation, Green found herself in a similar position as in the first. Just like in the first half, she buried the shot and gave the Quakers a 2-1 lead.
Roanoke tried all it could in the final minutes but were unsuccessful as GC held on for the one-goal victory.
The Maroons registered six shots on goal compared to three for the Quakers.
Ady Franken made five saves in 43 minutes of action.
Madison Musgrave stood in front of the net for the remainder of the game.
