The Guilford College men's basketball team faced the 15th ranked Eagles of Wisconsin-La Crosse in the championship game of the Marietta Shrine Tournament. A 13-point deficit at halftime proved too large for the Quakers as they fell 74-68.
Tyler Dearman led the way for Guilford with 21 points while grabbing nine rebounds. Luke and
Gabe Proctor each finished with 10 points.
Coming out of halftime, Guilford trailed Wisconsin-La Crosse, 40-27. The Quakers trailed by double digits until they went on a 7-0 run with five points from Dearman.
The Eagles, still holding the advantage, reopened their lead back to 13 (58-45) with 12:58 remaining in regulation. However, GC responded once more as it scored the next nine points to make the score 58-54 just over four minutes later.
From there the difference stayed about between four to seven points over the next four minutes when
Gabe Proctor hit a three with 4:36 to go in regulation to pull Guilford within one (65-64).
Unfortunately, this was the closest the Quakers got to taking the lead. Wisconsin-La Crosse expanded its advantage and went on to win by six points.
In the first half, both teams were evenly matched until midway through the first half when the Eagles used a 12-3 run to open their advantage to 10 (31-21).
The Quakers out-rebounded the Eagles 37-29 while the Eagles shot 50% (27-54) from the field and 42.9% (12-28) from range.
Guilford returns to Ragan-Brown Field House to face North Carolina Wesleyan College on Wednesday, November 16. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
