Guilford Grasped Early Control Against Berry

The Guilford College women's basketball team faced the Berry College Vikings in the final game before Thanksgiving Break. The Quakers took early control and defeated the Vikings, 61-51.

Within the first two minutes of the game, Guilford started  off strong by putting the first four points on the board by Ashtyn Zeigler and Carleigh Perry. Berry ended the streak and took the lead at the seven-minute mark, 5-4. Both squads continued to fight as they were going back and forth. The Quakers closed the final 90 seconds with a 7-0 run to lead 16-11 going into the second.

The start of the second quarter consisted of the Quakers making a clean three pointer by Madeleine Jenkins. The Quakers were able to maintain their lead and increased their score by seven at the three-minute mark with a jumper from Kaylee Travlos, 24-17. Going into halftime, the Quakers added three more points while the visitors added two points as it was an eight-point game, 27-19.

Guilford came out of halftime strong with a smooth three pointer by J'la Hinson assisted by Perry. The Quakers increased their lead by double digits at the eight-minute mark with another three pointer by Zeigler, 34-21. In the middle of the third, the Vikings cut the gap to five but the Quakers swooped in to increase their lead by double digits and the ended the quarter, 48-32.

The fourth quarter started with the Vikings making a good layup followed by a jumper. Guilford responded with a layup from Gauldin followed by a three pointer by Courtney McMillan with an assist from Amara Harrell, 53-36. Both teams continued to battle but the Quakers were able to hold on for the 10-point win.

Gauldin led the Quakers with 14 points while adding on three rebounds and two steals. Zeigler followed behind with eight points and two rebounds. McMillan finished the evening with seven points, nine rebounds and four steals.

Guilford will host Averett University for an ODAC matchup on Wednesday, November 30. Start time is set for 5:00 p.m.
