Women's Basketball Battles Spartans

The Guilford College women's basketball team opened its season, traveling down the road to UNC Greensboro to face the Spartans. The Quakers fought and fell to the Spartans 100-74.

Guilford fought hard in the first quarter, holding their own and also winning the first jump ball of the season securing the first possession. Through the first half of the quarter, Guilford held its own, nearly matching the scoring of the Spartans, 13-11. Then UNCG went on a run for the rest of the quarter only allowing two more points to make the score of the first quarter 26-13.

The start of the second quarter consisted of another UNCG run with back-to-back steals to make the score 45-21. Then the Quakers showed life by going on a 7-0 run led by Lindsay Gauldin with a steal and back-to-back field goals and Nyla Brown with a mid-range jumper and going one for two from the free throw line, making the score 45-28. The half ended with another layup from Gauldin to make the score 53-30 at the half.

Guilford came out of halftime with energy matching the Spartan's offense. Towards the middle of the quarter, the Quakers scored back-to-back field goals with an and-one from Gauldin and a three-point shot from J'la Hinson to make the score 63-42. This sparked some energy from Guilford, leading to back-to-back euro step conversions from Gauldin and a layup from Ashtyn Zeigler to make the score 68-49 Spartans. In the last second of the quarter, Hinson ran the court and made a layup leading to a 70-51 score at the end of the quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Quakers found their touch from range, hitting four three-point shots with two from Hinson as Madeleine Jenkins and Gauldin converted the other two. GC trailed 90-70 with 4:39 to play in the game. Guilford and UNCG continued to trade baskets until the end of the game.

The Quakers had great games out of seniors Hinson with 22 points and Gauldin with 20 points, five rebounds, and four assists.

Guilford faces crosstown rivals, Greensboro College on Saturday, November 12. Start time is set for 7:00 p.m.
