The Guilford College men's lacrosse team opened its season against St. Mary's College of Maryland in a neutral site battle. The Quakers fell to the Seahawks, 15-5.
St. Mary's (1-0) opened the scoring just over a minute into the game while a man-up. The Seahawks added to its lead three minutes later from Abe Hubbard once more.
Guilford (0-1) cut the deficit in half with a goal from
Gabe Alvarez during a man-up situation. The Quakers trailed 2-1 at the 8:23 mark of the first.Â
St. Mary's then scored the next six goals that spanned the remainder of the first and all of the second period. The Seahawks held an 8-1 lead going into halftime.
Joseph Hirvonen and GC struck first in the third after putting away a pass from
Dimaggio Wilson to cut the deficit to six (8-2) at the 11:48 mark.
St. Mary's answered at the 5:57 mark but the Quakers and
Justin Barry found the back of the net 3:30 later with another assist to Wilson. The Seahawks scored once more with nine seconds left in the third to lead 10-3 going into the final 15 minutes of regulation.
In the fourth, St. Mary's scored two goals to begin but Wilson then scored at the 11:43 mark with a helper from
Jax Atkins. The Seahawks scored three more goals before Guilford and
Kyle Smaw found the back of the net. The Quakers ultimately fell, 15-5.
Wilson led GC with three total points with one goal and two assists. The senior also corralled four ground balls.
Ryan Reed made 12 saves in net for the Quakers.
Guilford will open the home-portion of the schedule on Tuesday, February 15 against Greensboro College. Start time is set for 5:00 p.m.
