The Guilford College women's basketball team faced the top-seed Washington & Lee Generals in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament Quarterfinals. The Quakers fell to the Generals, 65-54.
Washington & Lee opened the scoring with two free throws but a jumper by
Ashtyn Zeigler evened the score. The Generals then hit consecutive three-point shots to go ahead 8-2 at the 8:36 mark.
However, threes by
Lindsay Gauldin and
Carleigh Perry tied the game once again. W&L went on a 10-0 run till
J'la Hinson made two free throws at the 1:16 mark. The Generals made a layup but a Gauldin had the answer with a layup of her own.
The ensuing inbounds was stolen by Gauldin as she put up layup. After another make for W&L,
Courtney McMillan hit a three with one second left on the clock to trail 22-17 going to the second.
Quakers kept the momentum into the start of the second jumper by Perry quickly followed by a McMillan layup to pull within one (22-21). The Generals first make of the second came at the 7:02 mark with a three but Hinson found Perry in the paint for the reverse layup to make the score 25-23.
Both squads exchanged field goals until Washington & Lee made a three and a layup to go ahead 35-29 at the 2:51 mark. Hinson stopped the small run with a three but the Generals hit a three of their own. As time expired, W&L hit a shot from distance to lead 41-32 at the half.
Gauldin got the scoring started in the third but the Generals outscored GC, 7-2, and led 48-36 as it Guilford called timeout at the 6:12 mark. The Quakers slowly chipped at the deficit and threes by Perry and
Anayaih Randolph forced a timeout at the 1:55 mark, trailing 48-47.
Out of the timeout, both teams traded possessions until Gauldin made a reverse layup to give GC its first lead of the game, 49-48. The scored stayed that way to start the final 10 minutes of regulation.
Each team stood strong defensively before W&L made a layup. Zeigler responded with a layup of her but the Generals hit a three to regain the lead, 53-51. The jumper from distance began a 10-0 run till the 2:35 mark when coach Mathews called a timeout, down 60-51. The deficit proved too steep as the Quakers ultimately fell by 11 points.
Gauldin finished the game with 15 points and in the process joined the 1,000-point club at Guilford, scoring 1,012 points in her career. She also finished with five assists, four rebounds and three steals. Perry added 10 points, five rebounds and five steals while Hinson scored nine points.
The difference in the game was rebounding and three-point percentage as W&L topped both. The Generals out rebounded the Quakers 37-28 and shot 10-26 (38.5%) from the field compared to 6-16 (37.5%) for GC.
Prior to the game, the ODAC honored its All-Conference team selections as
Lindsay Gauldin was named First Team All-ODAC.
Guilford finishes the 2021-22 season with a record of 8-17 and 5-13 in the conference.
