Baseball Splits Doubleheader

The Guilford College baseball team welcomed the Franklin & Marshall Diplomats for a Saturday twin bill. The Quakers took the first game, 7-6, before falling in game two, 8-3.

Game 1: Guilford 7, Franklin & Marshall 6 (11 Inn.)

After the Diplomats went down in order to start the game, Guilford looked to score first. Austin Bailey doubled followed by a single from Colin Smith and a Isaiah Hairston walk to load the bases. Grayson Tudor reached on an error by the left fielder as Bailey crossed home plate to give the Quakers a 1-0 lead.

In the second, F&M responded as it pieced together six singles to score five runs. GC looked to cut into the deficit and did so as two runs scored including one off a Smith single.

Both teams went scoreless in the third along with the Diplomats held to just one hit in the top of the fourth. In the bottom half of the inning, Bryce Vestal doubled to bring home Carter Blum. Vestal then scored on a double by Smith to even the game at five.

The fifth and sixth were scoreless until the seventh as F&M recaptured the lead with a RBI single. Guilford evened the score in its half of the inning as Adam Anderson doubled to bring home Hayes Henderson. 

The score remained tied as the game went to extra innings. Both teams had chances to take the lead but were unable to capitalize until the bottom of the 11th. Hariston led the inning with a double followed by a Tudor single. After Nick Boles was intentionally walked, Anderson reached on a fielder's choice as Hairston was thrown out at home.

The same scenario happened with Clay Dilday has he reached while Tudor was out at home. With two outs, Michael Sumner looked to end the game and did so with a single to right field for the 7-6 win.

Vestal led the Quaker offense with three hits (two doubles), three runs and a RBI. Smith joined him with three hits and drove in three runs. Ty Clark picked up the win, going three innings and allowing one hit with two strikeouts.

Game 2: Franklin & Marshall 8, Guilford 3 (6 Inn.)

The Diplomats were the first strike as they scored four runs on three hits including two RBI doubles. Leading 4-0, F&M added to its lead in the second with triple sandwiched between two singles to go ahead 6-0.

Guilford got on the board in the bottom half of the second with a sacrifice fly from Izaac McGuire to bring home Tudor. The visitors extended its lead back to six in the next inning with a RBI single.

In the bottom of the fourth, Allden Horne brought home Hairston on a fielder's choice. Later in the inning, Horne scored on an error that let Will Stevens reach base.

Neither team scored in the fifth and the Diplomats added a run in the top of the sixth with a walk drawn as the bases were loaded. After the walk, the umpires called the game due to darkness with the final score of 8-3.

Vestal and Tudor each collected two hits while Hairston, Tudor and Horne scored the three runs. Drew Sawyer started on the mound, giving up four runs on three hits and allowing three walks.

Guilford welcomes Greensboro on Tuesday, March 1 for the first time this season. First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m.
