The Guilford College men's lacrosse team traveled to Virginia for the conference opener against Roanoke College. The Quakers fell to the Maroons, 25-4.
From the opening whistle, Roanoke (4-2, 1-0) took control of the game. The Maroons scored the first six goals that carried into the second period. At the 12:03 mark of the second, Guilford (2-4, 0-1) got on the board as
Nick Honkomp netted a pass from
Anthony Barnes Jr.
Roanoke then scored nine-straight goals and led 15-1 early in the third period. Honkomp scored the second goal of the game for the Quakers. The Maroons went on another 9-0 run before Honkomp completed the hat trick off a pass from
Gabe Alvarez.
Joseph Hirvonen scored the final GC goal but the hosts scored last to capture the 11-goal victory.
Ryan Reed made 12 saves in net for the Quakers.
Guilford travels to Shenandoah on Saturday, March 19 to face the Hornets. Start time is set for 1:00 p.m.
