The Guilford College softball traveled to North Carolina Wesleyan for a doubleheader. The Quakers lost game one to the Bishops, 6-1, but won game two, 6-4.
Game 1: N.C. Wesleyan 6, Guilford 1
The Bishops scored their first two runs in the bottom of the first as they stole home and a RBI single.Â
The Quakers were not able to score in the next two innings but the hosts scored another run off a single to center field, 3-0.Â
As the bottom of the fourth came around, N.C. Wesleyan hit a two-run homer over the Ieft field wall. The Quakers were able to score their only run in the top of the sixth by Abbie Hill as Ally Clemens doubled to left field.Â
N.C. Wesleyan ended the bottom of the sixth and won by five (6-1).
Gray pitched all seven innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits and striking out three. Hill and Clemens each went 2-3 from the plate.
Game 2: Guilford 6, N.C. Wesleyan 4
The first run came in the bottom of the second by the Bishops. The Quakers responded by scoring in the top of the third when Katey Griswold scored on a Hill single.
Neither team scored in the next two innings until the bottom of the fifth when NCWC broke the tie with a RBI double.
Trailing by one (2-1) Guilford responded once more as an error on the catcher resulted in a run by Kylee Duarte to tie the score.
The next at-bat, Kassidy Lancos hit a single to left field where Morgan Kinney and Ally Morales made it home taking the lead, 4-2.Â
GC scored once more in the top of the sixth from Griswold off a double by Caitlyn Ray. N.C. Wesleyan added a run in the sixth but the Quakers were ahead, 5-3.
As the top of the seventh came around, Guilford added an insurance run as Lancos walked with the bases loaded to bring
Ally Coker to home.
The Bishops tried to rally but were only able to score one run and left the bases loaded. The Quakers held on for the 6-4 win.
Lancos was 2-4 from the plate with three RBI and a walk. Ray, Hill, and Griswold all had one RBI.
Morgan Kinney started in the circle and went the distance, giving four runs (three earned) on eight hits and striking out four.
Guilford (9-9) will play at home on Wednesday, March 23 against crosstown foe, Greensboro College. Game one is set to begin at 2:00 p.m.
