The Guilford College baseball team faced the Emory & Henry College Wasps on McBane Field. The Quakers rallied on two occasions for the win, 13-9.
After a 1-2-3 inning to open the game, Guilford (4-11) captured the first run as
Isaiah Hairston doubled to left center to bring home
Colin Smith.
Emory & Henry (4-13) responded in the top of the second as it scored seven runs on four hits. The Quakers looked to answer in their half of the inning as
Michael Sumner doubled to center to bring home
Grayson Tudor and
Adam Anderson.
After a
Hayes Henderson sacrifice fly, Smith singled to plate
Bryce Vestal. With the bases loaded, Tudor drew a walk as Smith scored once more. The Wasps still led but only by one (7-6) going to the third.
Following E&H going down in order to begin the third, GC evened the score in its half of the third when Vestal singled to center as Sumner scored. Neither team added a run in the fourth.
In the fifth, the Wasps recaptured the lead with a two-run homer. The visitors held the advantage until the bottom of the sixth as Smith grounded out to second but gave enough of an opening for Vestal to score.
The next at-bat, Hairston hit a sacrifice fly to center as Henderson tagged up from third. With the game tied at nine, the Quakers took the advantage in the seventh when
Izaac McGuire reached on a fielding error as Tudor crossed home plate. McGuire later scored on a Henderson sacrifice fly.
In the eighth, Sumner drew a bases loaded walk before
Austin Bailey scored on a wild pitch to put GC up 13-9.
Down to its final three outs, Emory & Henry led the ninth off with a single. Afterwards
Jacob Ray forced two groundouts and struck out the last batter to secure the win.
Sumner finished the day with three hits, four RBI and two runs. Henderson, Smith and Hairston each drove in two runs. Ray picked up the win, throwing four innings in relief, allowing just four hits and striking out four.
Guilford will host Hampden-Sydney on Saturday, March 26 in a doubleheader. Game one is set to begin at 12:00 p.m.
