The Guilford College women's volleyball team welcomed the University of Lynchburg for the first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match of the season. The Quakers fell to the Hornets, 3-1.
A very even start to the match for both team with Lynchburg (5-2, 1-0) holding a 17-13 advantage. Guilford (2-7, 0-1) won seven-straight with two kills by
Paige McDonald and two aces from
Madison Duvall.
The Hornets responded by taking the next seven points and regaining the lead, 24-20. An error and a
Maddi Page ace pulled the Quakers within two but the visitors got the kill they needed to win the set, 25-22.
In the second, both sides went back-and-forth controlling the set until Guilford claimed six of seven points to go ahead 14-11. Lynchburg chipped away at the deficit and then the set became a seesaw affair. The Hornets trailing one (25-24), won the final three points ton 27-25 and go ahead 2-0.
GC opened the early advantage in the third (9-5) before Lynchburg gained a three-point edge, 17-14. Three kills from
Natalie Moore and two from McDonald during an 8-1 run propelled the Quakers in the lead, 22-18.
The Hornets battled back and capture five of the next seven to pull within one (24-23). On the next point, Guilford received the serve and as Page set the ball, McDonald slammed it home for the set win, 25-23.
Lynchburg captured the early lead in the fourth but a 4-0 run by the Quakers gave them the 10-9 edge. The Hornets had different plans as they slowly recaptured and expanded the lead, 21-15. GC tried to cut the difference but it was too large as they fell 25-17 and dropped the match.
Offensively, McDonald and Moore paced the team with 16 and 11 kills, respectively. Page totaled 34 assists, nine digs and two aces.
Lydia Saunders led the defense with 20 digs while
Zoe Whisnant had 13. Duvall led the block party with four on the evening.
Guilford remains home as Meredith College makes the trek on Friday, September 15. Start time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
