Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Victorious in Defensive Battle

The Guilford College men's basketball team welcomed the Maroons of Roanoke College. The 17th-ranked Quakers gained early control and dealt the Maroons their first ODAC loss of the year, 61-50.

Leading the way for Guilford (14-3, 7-1) was Tyler Dearman with 11 points and 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Myles Washington was the next highest scorer with 10 points.

Julius Burch opened the game with a jumper in the paint for the game's first basket. Roanoke (14-3, 7-1) tied the game on the ensuing possession. However, a three by Jorden Davis followed by a Luke Proctor layup put GC up 7-2.

For a majority of the half, both squads played sound defense forcing empty possessions but the Quakers held serve as they led by six (21-15) with 5:16 remaining in the first. The Maroons cut the deficit to four but Guilford expanded it back to 10 and held that difference at the half, 29-19.

Roanoke opened the second with a good jumper but GC opened a 7-0 run capped off by a Luke Proctor three. The home squad found itself up 15 (36-21) at the 16:39 mark. The visitors began to slowly chip away at the difference and made the score 42-36 with just over 11 minutes left in regulation.

The Quakers regained their composure after a quick timeout and eventually held a double-digit edge once more (55-41). Roanoke tried to pull its way back into the game but only got as close as nine points (57-48) with 4:49 on the clock.

Makes by Dearman and Caleb Farrish secured the 11-point victory for Guilford and ended the visitors undefeated stretch in league play.

As a team, the Quakers outrebounded the Maroons 42-31 and forced 13 turnovers. Points in the paint were a difference maker as GC won that battle 34-20.

Guilford hits the road to the Virginia coastline to take on the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins on Saturday, January 21. Start time is set for 2:00 p.m.
