Strong Second Half Gives Quakers Home Win

The Guilford College women's basketball hosted the Shenandoah University Hornets. Guilford overcame their first-half shooting struggles to come back and win, 69-58. 

The first quarter started off slow for both teams win the first points of the game coming almost a minute and a half into the quarter. Both teams continued to struggle to get their footing. The low-scoring quarter ended on a Guilford run to make the score 11-10.

Early into the second quarter, both teams were still struggling to score. Shenandoah put together a seven-point run in the middle of the quarter to take the lead. Both teams continued to trade buckets until Shenandoah went on another run of 10 points at the end of the half to make the score 32-22 making this their largest lead of the game. The Hornets led by eight (32-24) at the half. 


Guilford was able to change the momentum at the start of the third quarter with multiple steals and defensive stops. The Quakers were clawing themselves back into the game with a nine-point swing over the Hornets. The Quakers found themselves tied at 39-39. From here both teams traded buckets for the rest of the quarter making the score 47-47.

To start the fourth quarter the Quakers went on a run of five points and never looked back while maintaining a safe distance from Shenandoah to end the game up 11 points. 


The Quakers were led by Lindsay Gauldin with 19 points, and seven steals while Ashtyn Zeigler finished with 14 points and three assists. Shooting nearly 53% in the second half, GC finished the day going 40.9% (27-66) from the field. The Quakers also forced 23 turnovers and scored 25 points off those turnovers.

Guilford will enjoy some rest as it takes on Eastern Mennonite at home on Saturday, January 14 at 2 p.m.
