Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Defensive Showdown Culminates in Hard-Fought Victory Against the Falcons

The Guilford College men's basketball team closed their pre-Thanksgiving slate at Jack Jensen Court, facing the Falcons of Pfeiffer University. In a matchup where both teams struggled to find offensive rhythm, the Quakers triumphed in an eventual seven-point victory, 64-57.

Tyler Dearman continued his hot start to the season with 21 points, seven rebounds, and two steals. Julius Burch was the only other scorer in double digits, with 11.

Guilford (4-0) jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the opening four minutes, but Pfeiffer (2-3) rode a 16-6 run, including three scores beyond the arc, to take a four-point lead halfway through the first period (16-12). From then on, both squads struggled to make shots consistently, going cold from the three-point line.

The Falcons used their size advantage to penetrate the paint and score from within, including a number of free throws to stay ahead of the Quakers. After two free throw makes from Burch tied the contest at 27 with 2:20 on the clock, the visitors scored the remaining five points, including a step-back two-pointer from Daniel Fulp with four seconds left on the clock. At the half, Guilford trailed by five (32-27).

To start the second, the Quakers got on the board quickly, another bucket from Burch closed the deficit to three before the Falcons replied with a three-pointer. Another consecutive make from beyond the arc gave Pfeiffer its largest lead of the night (38-31), with 18:01 on the clock. The teams kept neck-and-neck at one another for the next six minutes, but the home side were able to close the gap and tie the game at 45. Dearman added six points in this run, along with both Proctor brothers, Luke and Gabe, contributing three each.

Coming down to the last few minutes of the game, the Quakers were able to keep drawing contact in the paint and make clutch foul shots to stave off the Falcons. Guilford made 11 of 12 free throws in this stretch, including 11 from Dearman alone, who went 13-14 from the line overall. His efforts were key to keeping the distance just far enough to grasp the victory at the buzzer.

Rob Littlejohn contributed nine points, including two free throws. Once more, foul shots were key for Guilford, going 21-23 (91.3%) as opposed to Pfeiffer, who were just 5-9 (55.6%).

The Quakers return to action post-Thanksgiving on the road, traveling to Raleigh, N.C. to face William Peace University on Wednesday, November 29. Start time is set for 7:00 p.m.
