The Guilford College women's basketball team hit the road to face the University of Lynchburg. A high-scoring second half for both teams, the Quakers edged out the Hornets, 80-78.
Anna Giannopoulou led the Quakers with 21 points, seven rebounds and four assists. A total of 10 different members of the women's basketball team made a field goal.
Coming out of halftime, Guilford (6-1, 3-1) led Lynchburg (4-5, 1-4) 31-25. The Hornets made a three to open the third period before the Quakers scored the next four points. Shots kept falling for the hosts as they made three-consecutive threes capped by a free throw to take a 38-37 lead, the first of the game for them.
GC was able to recapture the advantage as
Carleigh Perry made two baskets in a row. Lynchburg chipped away and evened the game at 44 with 3:04 left in the third. The Quakers made six-straight free throws and found themselves back in front. The visitors held the lead, 55-52, going to the final 10 minutes of regulation.
Giannopoulou opened the quarter with a three-pointer to extend the advantage for Guilford. The Hornets were able to narrow the difference to one possession but the Quakers used and 8-0 run to lead 79-69 with 26 seconds left in the fourth.Â
Lynchburg started to mount a comeback as it went on an 8-1 run to trail only by three with eight seconds on the clock. Fortunately for the visiting side, time ran out on the comeback as GC held on for the two-point victory.
Ashtyn Zeigler scored 12 points while
Taylor Dunn and
Zoe Bayer added 10 points each. The Quakers had 22 fast break points while shooting 80-percent (28-35) from the free throw line.
Guilford welcomes Pfeiffer University on Friday, December 15 to Ragan-Brown Field House. Start time is set for 6:00 p.m.
