The Guilford College men's basketball team faced the Bridgewater College Eagles in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Quarterfinals. In a second half that saw 113 combined points, the Quakers were able to outlast the Eagles, 94-90.
Bridgewater nailed the first basket of the game but the Guilford offense took over. GC went on a 15-0 run over the next 3:40 including seven points from Julius Burch.Â
From there the Eagles slowly chipped away at the deficit. For the next eight-plus minutes, BC scored 16 of the next 24 points to make it a four-point game, 23-19.
Both offenses began to even out with the Quakers slowly extending their lead behind Jorden Davis who hit two three-point shots.
Late in the half, Bridgewater used a 5-0 to pull within one (35-34). Coming down the court,
Elijah Bowens pulled up from 14 feet and handed the Quakers a 37-34 lead at the break.
Out of the locker room, the Eagles started off hot as they hit three shots from distance in an 11-3 run. The stretch captured a 45-40 lead for BC.
A layup off the hand of Burch followed by a left corner three from Davis pulled Guilford with two. Both teams began to lock down the other's offense as the Quakers called a timeout with 14:39 still down by two (47-45).
GC kept the run going with back-to-back mid-range jumpers from Myles Washington as the team went ahead 53-47 with 12:28 remaining in regulation. The next 3:43 of game action was mostly Bridgwater as it outscored the Quakers 11-5 and evened the game at 58 with 8:26 on the clock.
WIth possessions becoming more valuable, the long ball became a sweet spot for Guilford. The Quakers went 4-4 from three over the next 2:34 to hold a six-point edge, 70-64. Both teams fell in love with the three-point basket but GC matched the Eagles down the stretch.
In the last 28 seconds of regulation, Bridgewater went on a 8-2 run capped off by a three with seven seconds left to make it a 93-90 game. On the ensuing inbound, Bowens was able to corral a loose ball and was sent to the line for two. After missing the first, Bowens nailed the second one to secure the four-point victory.
Leading the way for the Quakers was
Jorden Davis with 22 points, going 7-10 from three and tying a tournament record for a game. Burch ended with a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. As a team, Guilford was 15-26 (.557) from behind the arc.
Guilford will face the second-seeded Hampden-Sydney Tigers in the semifinals. Start time is set for 8:00 p.m.
