The Guilford College baseball team welcomed the 17th-ranked Methodist University Monarchs to McBane Field. The bats came alive early and often as the Quakers were victorious, 16-6.
Methodist opened the game by scoring the first two runs but Guilford quickly responded. In the bottom of the first,
Isaiah Hairston singled to right field to bring home
Chase Wade and
Michael Sumner. Couple of at-bats later,
Allden Horne followed with an RBI single to left to hand the Quakers a 3-2 lead.
GC added to its advantage in the second as
Nick Boles scored on a wild pitch. The Monarchs bounced back in the third with two RBI singles to even the game at four.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the fourth when Hairston delivered another RBI single. Horne continued the momentum with a sacrifice fly as Hairston tagged from third. The final run of the winning was
Rylan Smith as he crossed home due to a wild pitch.
From that point, Guilford had full grasp of the game, slowly adding nine runs over the next four innings including a solo home run from
Colin Smith. The visitors added a run in the eighth and ninth innings but the Quakers cruised to the 10-run win.
Hairston finished the afternoon with four hits, five RBI and scoring two runs.
Jackson Marcellus picked up the win, tossing seven innings with four allowed runs (two earned) on six hits and striking out seven.
